Stopping Speeders with Technology
A significant number of people who are ultimately arrested for a DUI offense are initially stopped due to speeding. This is intriguing because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has stated in its DUI enforcement manuals that speeding is not an indicator of impaired driving. Nonetheless, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 28% of fatal crashes in 2022 were related to speeding, killing over 12,000 people that year. Legislators in the state of Washington have decided to use technology to address the problem, which is particularly prevalent in that state. A news article published in “TheStreet,” highlights 2025 Washington House Bill 1596, which proposes allowing drivers with suspended licenses to continue operating vehicles with a designated “intelligent speed-restricted” license. Eligible drivers for this restricted license are those whose

The Future of Ignition Interlock Device Technology
Preventing drunk driving has long been a priority in automotive safety, law enforcement, and public health. One technology leading this charge is the Ignition Interlock Device (IID). Designed to keep impaired drivers off the road, IIDs serve as an innovative solution to enhance road safety and reduce alcohol-related accidents. But while today’s IIDs are effective, tomorrow’s advancements promise to revolutionize how we prevent drunk driving. How Do Current Ignition Interlock Devices Work? Ignition interlock devices operate as a breathalyzer for vehicles. Installed in a car’s ignition system, an IID requires drivers to submit a breath sample before starting the engine. If the device detects a Breath Alcohol Concentration (BAC) over the pre-set limit, the car won’t start. Here’s how the standard process works: Additional features include rolling retests, which randomly
The Role of Technology in Ignition Interlock Devices
Ignition interlock devices (IIDs) utilize technology to ensure that drivers are sober before and during the operation of a vehicle. These devices accurately measure blood alcohol concentration (BAC) through alcohol-specific fuel sensors and, in some cases, advanced features like cameras and GPS tracking. If alcohol is detected in the breath sample or if the camera and facial recognition software can’t verify the identity of the driver, the device will prevent the vehicle from starting. Technology is constantly changing the way we live and when it comes to road safety, that’s a very good thing. One of the clearest examples of this is how IIDs have evolved into smarter, smaller, and more user-friendly devices. How Technology Has Transformed IIDs The first generation of interlock devices used semiconductors to detect alcohol,
The Costs Associated with a DUI, Including Fines, Fees, and Ignition Interlock Costs
A drunk driving conviction can be overwhelming, not just emotionally but also financially. The costs can add up quickly, from fines and legal fees to ignition interlock requirements and administrative expenses. While this might feel stressful, knowing what to expect and making informed decisions like working with an experienced attorney and choosing a certified, trustworthy ignition interlock provider, can make the process more manageable. Breaking Down the Costs of a DUI DUI fines vary by state but can be significant, especially for repeat offenses. While hiring an attorney adds to the expense, it can be a valuable investment. A lawyer can help navigate the legal system, ensure all paperwork is handled correctly, and may even help reduce fines or penalties. Many attorneys offer payment plans, making legal representation more accessible.
Proposed Increase in Tennessee Penalties for Aggravated Vehicular Assault and Homicide
Tennessee State Representative Ron Gant (R-Piperton) has introduced House Bill 190, which would increase penalties for aggravated vehicular assault and aggravated vehicular homicide for those defendants registering a blood alcohol level between .15% and .20% and meeting the other qualifications of the applicable laws. These changes to Tennessee Code Annotated Sections 39-13-115 and 39-13-218, in conjunction with Senator Paul Rose’s (R-Dyersburg) companion Senate Bill 457, would lower the blood alcohol concentration for increased penalties, bringing these in line with the increased penalty provisions currently in place for DUI defendants registering between a blood alcohol level between .15% and .20%. Aggravated vehicular homicide is a Class A felony that carries from 15 to 60 years in prison, while aggravated vehicular assault is a Class C felony in Tennessee, which has penalties
