Wrong-way driver arrested near Mesa facing aggravated DUI charges; drove 11 miles, DPS says

Source: 3TV/CBS 5 A wrong-way driver is now in custody after being accused of driving under the influence near Mesa late Sunday night. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, multiple 911 calls were received of a driver going eastbound in the westbound lanes of SR-202 near Alma School just before midnight. Cinco de Mayo weekend DUI task force reports fewer arrests

Arizona law-enforcement agencies over the Cinco de Mayo weekend made fewer impaired-driving arrests but stopped more motorists than they did during the same period in 2013. Police made 500 arrests on suspicion of driving under the influence out of more than 11,000 traffic stops from Thursday through Monday, according to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. Arizona Court Overturns Marijuana DUI Ruling

PHOENIX (AP) — Authorities can’t prosecute Arizona motorists for driving under the influence of marijuana unless the person is impaired at the time of the stop, the state Supreme Court ruled Tuesday in the latest opinion on an issue that several states have grappled with across the nation. The ruling overturned a state Court of Appeals decision last year that upheld the right of authorities to prosecute pot smokers for DUI even when there is no evidence of impairment. Read More »
