Cops: Volusia fire lieutenant ‘was just playing around’ before DUI arrest

Daytona, FL – The Orlando Sentinel

South Daytona Police struggled to catch up with a speeding Volusia County Fire Services lieutenant before they pulled him over for drunk driving late Monday, authorities said.

Lt. Thomas McDonough, 50, was driving 70 mph on Beville Road — a 45 mph zone — after having a few drinks “a short while ago” at the Roadside Tavern in Port Orange, an arrest report said.

“I was just playing around,” McDonough said to officers when asked why he was speeding.

The lieutenant was charged with driving under the influence and taken to Volusia County Branch Jail.

He has since posted bail.
