Two Hialeah police motorcycle officers surrendered on Wednesday to face allegations they issued dozens of bogus traffic tickets to motorists.
Prosecutors charged Ernesto Arias-Martinez, 23, and Armando Perez, 40, with multiple felony counts of official misconduct and falsifying public records. They were being jailed early Wednesday and are expected to post bond by later in the day.
These actions by two motorcycle cops evidence a number of problems. The inherent dishonesty of these officers, while not rampant in every department, is symptomatic of the notion that many officers think they can get away with anything (Derek Chauvin almost did). It demonstrates that quotas (they call them performance standards), encourage this type of behavior. Think about that the next time you or someone you know is arrested for DUI, or worse.
