Mich. public safety director on leave after DUI arrest following crash

Geoffrey Smith, public safety director for the City of Sturgis, has been arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated after an early morning crash.

Smith has been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation from his job.

Sturgis city officials said early Sunday Smith was off-duty when the vehicle he was in crashed into an SUV in the 600 block of North Lakeview Avenue. The force of the crash pushed the SUV into another car, which then struck a minivan, police said.

Smith was transported to the Sturgis Hospital emergency room for treatment of minor injuries.
