Lewes Woman Arrested for 6th Offense DUI, Shoplifting Meat

LEWES, Del.- A Lewes woman has been arrested for 6th offense DUI, shoplifting and related offenses after authorities say she drove drunk to a supermarket in order to steal meat.

Police said it happened at around 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, when troopers were dispatched to the ACME, located at 18578 Coastal Highway Unit 13 in Lewes, for a report of an intoxicated woman inside of the store shoplifting.

Prior to arrival, Troopers received broadcasts from the Sussex County Emergency Operation Center about an Acura SUV with Delaware temporary registration swerving all over the roadway and entering the ACME parking lot.

Police said that when troopers arrived on the scene, store employees told them that the intoxicated woman placed an undisclosed amount of meat inside of her purse and walked out of the store. Troopers located the suspect inside of her 2020 Acura RDX with the engine running in the parking lot. An odor of alcohol was detected and an open alcohol bottle was in plain sight, according to troopers. Subsequently, a DUI investigation ensued and a computer inquiry revealed that the suspect, 58-year-old Donna Connelly, of Lewes, had a suspended license and five prior DUI arrests.
