Shawnee Heights superintendent arrested on suspicion of DUI

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) – The Shawnee Heights USD 450 superintendent was arrested late Saturday night on suspicion of driving under influence of alcohol or drugs.

Martin Stessman was booked into the Jefferson County Jail around 10:30 pm and was released by 11:45 pm after posting $1,000 bond.

The Kansas Highway Patrol made the arrest.

According to KHP, someone called 911 reporting a reckless driver on I-70 and Rice Road. The caller followed the vehicle north on K-4 to Highway 24 and then east. They noticed the vehicle make a U-Turn on the highway and then head back west.

A Trooper found Stessman parked on the side of the highway at 8:25pm.

They then conducted a field sobriety test and there were indicators he was impaired.

It was noted that Stessman was cooperative with the Trooper during the investigation.

Troopers say he blew over a .08 on a preliminary breath test, which is above the legal limit in Kansas.

We reached out to Stessman – he told 13 News he will release a statement after he has spoken with the district’s board of education. The board has already called a special meeting for Sunday night.

The Shawnee Heights school board held a meeting less than 24 hours after Stessman’s arrest, but took no action.
