Man Pulled Over for Driving Backhoe While Drunk, His Eighth DWI

A New Jersey man was arrested this week after cops say he was spotted drifting between the road and the shoulder in a backhoe while intoxicated.

The South Brunswick Police Department received phone calls about a man driving the heavy machinery erratically on Tuesday afternoon.

A responding officer saw the driver swaying back and forth in the lane and onto the shoulder of the road while slumped over the wheel of the backhoe, cops said in a statement.

After using his lights to pull the backhoe over, the officer reported smelling alcohol inside. The officer said the driver, identified as 56-year-old William Campbell, had a bottle of Jack Daniels and a bottle of vodka with him.

Campbell reportedly also admitted to the officer that he did not have a valid driver’s license.

The officer performed field sobriety tests, after which Campbell was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

“The callers alerted us to this driver and an officer was in the area immediately. The actions of the caller and officer took this impaired driver off the road before anyone was harmed,” said South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond Hayducka.
