Driver accused of striking bicyclist arrested on DUI charge

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – Charleston Police arrested a Mount Pleasant woman they say was the driver of a vehicle that struck a bicyclist in downtown Charleston Sunday night.

Gabriela Bennett, 23, was arrested on a charge of felony driving under the influence, Charleston Police Lt. Matthew Wojslawowicz said.

Police say the accident happened on King Street between Sheppard and Engel Streets at approximately 9:03 p.m. The crash involved a 2012 Subaru Impreza sedan traveling north on King Street that struck a bicyclist also traveling north, Wojslawowicz said.

Investigators say the bicyclist suffered serious injuries and EMS took the victim to an area hospital. As of late Sunday night, the bicyclist remained in critical condition, Wojslawowicz said.

Bennett showed signs of impairment on a field sobriety test which was administered to her during the investigation into the collision, Wojslawowicz said.

The crash prompted the closure of a portion of King Street for approximately three hours while investigators from the Charleston Police Major Accident Investigation Team collected evidence and towed the vehicle involved in the collision.

Bennett was being held at the Al Cannon Detention Center pending a bond hearing scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday.
