Ride-Sharing Services Look to Reduce Drunk Driving During Super Bowl Sunday

Super Bowl 50 is less than a week away and many across the country are solidifying their plans for one of the biggest sporting events of the year. As a time honored tradition, a lot of these plans will involve alcohol, and unfortunately, some may also involve driving. In an effort to reduce the historically high rates of drunk driving accidents, injuries, and fatalities during Super Bowl Sunday, ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are stepping up big time to keep impaired motorists off the road and promote their services.

According to a number of recent studies, ride-hailing services have had a marked impact on reducing the amount of drunk driving arrests and accidents in cities where they operate. Knowing that millions of Americans will be attending parties and filling bars, Uber conducted a study asking whether motorists would “probably end up driving” if ride-sharing services didn’t exist. Nearly 4 out of 5 respondents answered yes.

Aside from providing some insight into the public’s view of ride-sharing services and their benefits, the study also cleverly comes at a time when people will start thinking about their drinking and driving decisions. Experts believe the study, combined with other advertising and advocacy efforts, can greatly increase the number of Americans who will be using the ride-sharing services this Sunday, rather than driving themselves.

And doing so is a wise decision when you consider the fact that law enforcement throughout California and the country will be on high alert for impaired drivers. In Orange County and the surrounding areas where our firm practices, law enforcement agencies will be conducting many high visibility enforcement efforts, including sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols. Motorists who make the decision to drive should understand the risks of being stopped, as well as the penalties that may come following an arrest.

At the Law Offices of Virginia L. Landry, Inc., we hope that no matter which team you root for this Sunday, you make the decision to drink responsibly or plan for a ride. If you or someone you love happens to be arrested during this period of increased enforcement, our OC DUI lawyers are readily available to help you learn more about your case and what we can do to help.
