Understanding Ignition Interlocks: What They Are and How They Work

Understanding how ignition interlock devices work

An ignition interlock device, also known as a car breathalyzer, prevents a vehicle from starting unless the driver provides a breath sample into the device with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level that is below a pre-set limit. This effectively stops people from driving while drunk or under the influence.

The device is wired into the vehicle’s ignition system and requires the driver to blow into the mouthpiece before starting the engine. If it detects alcohol, it prevents the vehicle from starting. While driving, the ignition interlock device prompts the driver with random retests and the driver will have to provide a new breath sample each time. This ensures that the driver remains sober.

Getting an ignition interlock device installed is a common requirement following a drunk driving offense (DUI, DWI, OWI, or OVI). A court will determine how long the device needs to be installed based on the severity of the offense. This can change on a case-by-case basis.

How it Works

  1. Providing a breath sample

When the driver attempts to start the car, they must simultaneously blow and hum into the device for 3-5 seconds depending on your ignition interlock device.

  1. Alcohol analysis

The device analyzes the breath sample to determine the BAC level.

  1. Ignition control

If the BAC is above the pre-set limit, the device will not allow the vehicle to start. If the BAC is below the pre-set limit, the driver can go ahead and start the engine.

  1. Data recording

Most ignition interlocks store data on the breath tests, including the time of the test and BAC level, which can be accessed by monitoring authorities.

Whether mandated after a drunk driving offense or used voluntarily, ignition interlocks are an effective tool in reducing alcohol-related accidents and help ensure safer driving for everyone on the road. Choosing a reliable provider is important to ensure a smooth experience, from installation to ongoing compliance, giving drivers confidence in the device and its support.
